City Living

This city is thriving with enthusiasm and ambition.  Every corner features a low-budget carefully-made business opportunity.  I can’t walk within 100m of a semi-busy road without bodas stopping to ask if I would like a drive.  I have been to India, which is, without a doubt, considered an economic power-house.  The entrepreneurial drive that I see in Uganda is personally superior, if not equal.  However, considering India is such a large country, the main difference I see between areas of affluence and poverty within them is infrastructure, infrastructure, and infrastructure.  The roads here are built for a population at least a quarter of this size.  This leads to not only crowded streets, injuries, but also poor quality streets from all the traffic.

As for the clinic, we continue to see strange things in the large expatriate community.  The most recent being the mango fly/larvae.  Technically this is called myiasis.  It consists of a fly larva infiltrating the skin of a human who has exposed him/herself to soil or other areas.  Clinically it looks like a large closed comedone (which is why my initial thought was too un-roof it).  However, the patient had had a history of similar lesions, which led to further investigation.

Beyond this we have seen a case of Potts disease, malaria, and botulism.

Kampala

So everything is going well here.  I’m settling in and getting stuff done.  There was alot to do at first, like change currency, buy food, arrange transportation, etc., but that’s all worked out.  Now I just got out for the weekend and I will have time to relax and enjoy the warm weather and sun (it’s in the 80s here).

The clinic is just a little one, but it is a major drawing point for the city considering it has some of the few western trained doctors in town.  So we see some native Ugandans as well as European and North American expatriates who want medical care.  I am seeing stuff that one can’t see at home, and I think this will be a quality educational experience.
