GREEN

GREEN!!!after some mishaps getting to the airport in Michigan, five planes, and then almost 8 hours in a cramped minibus- that was the first impression I had of the Kwazulu natal province where Mseleni Hospital is located.  Beautiful , plush, and green!  I do not know how many hours I had been traveling but the fresh warm air and the beautiful landscapes made the long and weary travel worth it.   I also noticed that the people I met along the way were friendly and welcoming.

As I arrived with my “tour guide” Shakes in the moonlit sky, I was suprised at the gated hospital and guards. But then realized that Mseleni Hospital was started as a mission hospital and now  government owned.  It is a big facility and will write more about the hospital in an upcoming blog.

Shakes then proceeded to carry my heavy luggage through the sand as we were going to the Director’s house which was down a sandy path.  Even though I packed and repacked, I knew my luggage spoke”American”- always carrying a lot of stuff.  The “big black bag” made it on top of Shakes head.  I was seriously afriad he would have a head injury as the bag weight exactly 61lbs ( and Shakes is quite small).  But he did make it successfully without any neck injury. We had no flashlights.  But the sky was lit by the moon. However, I was fully aware that I was passing across many creepy crawly things….just praying that I heard no hissing and that nothing slithered across my feet.  Finally after ten minutes we made it to our destination.

The Director was already hosting many guests so I was to stay temporarily next door with the Bells.  They have been very welcoming.  They are a new couple ( wife is a social worker and husband is one of the Mseleni docs) from Capetown.  They showed me to my room and I was never so happy to see a bed.  I also had tea and then took a relaxing bubble bath.  I feel into a beautiful deep sleep for almost 10 hours. Woke up  and viewed the scenary…breathtaking and GREEN!!!

What a contrast from the view of my  Michigan apartment’s balcony which would be brown and dying leaves along with frost. As South Africa is heading into it’s summer- the sounds and colors are blooming. You can hear an orchestra of bullfrogs, crickets, and other animals at night.  SO much to learn about this interesting place and people. The Lord is good and His creations in different parts of the worls is marvelous to see!!
