Quinine For A Child? – Angola Day 11

happykids.JPG

Yesterday I was caring for 3 year old child in Emergency here at the Evangelical Medical Center of Lubango. He suffered from malaria and was in respiratory distress. His hemoglobin fell from 10 to 4 in just a few hours – indicating progressive destruction of his blood by the malaria parasite. I had a very difficult time finding the correct dose for treatment with IV quinine. It’s a medication we very rarely use in the US, let alone for a child.  I felt soooo very encouraged by the people wrote with the correct drug information, and who said how they were praying. Today he is dramatically better. Eyes open, cooing, nursing, breathing easily. I’m VERY happy!
