Newborns With Malaria – Angola Day 8

Newborn Malaria

This morning the mother of this two-week old girl declared “My baby Estele suddenly stopped nursing and now her entire body is limp!” Sure enough, the girl’s temp was quite low, her pulse rapid, and reflexes very poor. In North America we would be very suspicious of sepsis or pneumonia. But this is the southern Africa winter, and in spite of the cool weather malaria remains endemic. Estele’s malaria spear was positive. I repeated the test just to make sure. Our little fifty-drug hospital pharmacy has little appropriate to treat a newborn with resistant malaria. I started quinine and Bactrim. Look them up and you’ll see these are not ideal drugs, but it’s the best we have under these austere circumstances.
