{"id":24,"date":"2010-02-06T01:56:33","date_gmt":"2010-02-06T01:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/?p=24"},"modified":"2015-05-17T02:03:12","modified_gmt":"2015-05-17T02:03:12","slug":"a-day-in-the-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/2010\/02\/06\/a-day-in-the-life\/","title":{"rendered":"A Day In the Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover5-e1431827885980.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25\" src=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover5-e1431827885980.jpg\" alt=\"hoover5\" width=\"530\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This past Wednesday Ryan came with me to the hospital for the day to see more of what my life is like.\u00a0 I think he enjoyed his time and more importantly, it means we have pictures.\u00a0 : ) So welcome to B ward, the medical unit where my day started with rounds at 8:00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover8-e1431828063543.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27\" src=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover8-e1431828063543.jpg\" alt=\"hoover8\" width=\"530\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a picture of my half of the ward where I worked with Dr. Erin to see somewhere around 15 patients.\u00a0 If Ryan had turned around 180 degrees and taken another picture it looks basically the same on the other end of the ward.\u00a0 In the middle is the nurses\u2019 station.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So one by one we made our way around the room talking to each patient, asking how they were doing, ordering labs and making adjustments to their medications as necessary.\u00a0\u00a0 It is not uncommon to pull the ultrasound machine up to the ward to scan someone along the way as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover6-e1431827975308.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26\" src=\"https:\/\/inmedblogs.us\/christinehoover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/05\/hoover6-e1431827975308.jpg\" alt=\"hoover6\" width=\"530\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After we finish rounds, all the doctors head towards OPD, the outpatient department to start seeing patients.\u00a0 Patients line up outside the building where they are first screened by nurses who take their history and vitals.\u00a0 Simple problems the nurses will treat and send the patients home, but if they decide it is too complicated the patient continues on to the line to see the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve spent some time in OPD seeing patients, but I generally check the ER first and take care of any patients that need to be seen there.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I am in this picture.\u00a0 My patient is laying on a hard metal bed covered by a sheet of plastic.\u00a0 The book down by his feet is his scale book.\u00a0 Every patient has a book that they take to any medical facility they go to.\u00a0 That is where we leave notes on the patient\u2019s visit, prescriptions, and follow-up appointments.\u00a0 Theoretically you can see a patient\u2019s whole medical history by looking through this book.\u00a0 Theoretically\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We stop seeing patients around noon and head off for lunch.\u00a0 Ryan and I actually ventured off the station this day for lunch (instead of our typical PB&amp;J).\u00a0 We skipped on the betel nuts and cigarettes and went for flour balls and Coke.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now flour balls are something like doughnuts holes, but not really.\u00a0 They\u2019re deep fried dough but much denser than doughnut holes and not coated in sugar.\u00a0 They\u2019re actually really filling.\u00a0 And anyone who knows me knows I really can\u2019t stand Coke, but it actually tastes different here!\u00a0 I like the stuff!\u00a0 All I can come up with is that it doesn\u2019t have high fructose corn syrup in it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, after lunch it\u2019s back to more of the same.\u00a0 We keep seeing patients in OPD and the ER usually until about 4:30 or 5. For the next pictures in order &#8211; First is me talking to the son of a patient whose prognosis was not very good.\u00a0 Next is me doing a paracentesis on a man with extremely bad ascites.\u00a0 I had taken 3 L off his belly the previous Saturday. This Wednesday he was still short of breath so I took off 3 more liters.\u00a0 After that is me doing a lumbar puncture on a boy with a febrile illness of some sort.\u00a0 Then me ultrasounding another patient\u2019s belly in an attempt to figure out what his problem was. (Where\u2019s a CT scanner when you need one\u2026)\u00a0 And of course, there is always plenty of paperwork to be done.\u00a0 Although it is substantially less here compared to in the States.
