As I entered the hospital, I was met with metal detectors and X-ray machines at the entrance. People lined up, putting their bags into the machines and walking through the metal detectors while security waved their wands one by one. This was a new experience for me, as I am typically used to patients and families walking through the hospital entrance without being security-screened.

But that was not the surprising part. Inside the hospital, large crowds of patients, family members, and hospital staff filled the lobby and waiting areas like ants on a sugar cube. Walking around the hospital felt stressful. It gave me a sense of organized chaos that I was not familiar with. At this time, I started thinking about how difficult it must be for foreign patients to access the care they need. And I think the language barrier and cultural differences are the primary factors contributing to the challenge of receiving healthcare here.

The whole time I was thinking, “How are people able to get the care they need? How is the hospital making sure that their patients receive quality care?” I had so many questions. But I live by the mantra of “If it’s not broken, then don’t fix it” attitude. And this seems to apply to many aspects here in Shenyang. The community are used to this way of living here, and if the hospital system works for them, then that is something to be proud of.

Overall, I realized that healthcare systems around the world differ greatly from those in the US, and I was left with a stronger curiosity to learn more about medicine on the other side of the world.

A Different Rhythm of Care A few days into Shenyang, I was given the gracious opportunity to visit different large […]

[1

post-39","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
