We started the morning rounds in the ICU this morning. I told you\u00a0about a young man whose family had poisoned him. Now there is a young\u00a0woman in the ICU, also for poisoning from her family. This seems to\u00a0be fairly common and very sad.\u00a0I saw a baby die today. He had meningitis and had appeared to be\u00a0doing much better this morning. I watched uselessly as Dr. Rimi tried\u00a0to revive him this afternoon. They have very high death rates here.<\/p>\n

I was reading in the \u2018Hindustan Times\u2019 paper yesterday. India finally\u00a0came out with its own statistics about their HIV statistics and how\u00a0they\u2019re \u201conly\u201d (it actually said ONLY) 3 million and something, not\u00a0the 5 million and something that came out in the UNAIDS report. I\u00a0wonder how much time and energy and funding was poured into this\u00a0report.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m feeling a bit overwhelmed for several reasons. Obviously, this is\u00a0nothing like anything I\u2019ll see in the US. On top of the sheer intensity of the cases and the people, not understanding their\u00a0language is stressful. It\u2019s exhausting even to talk with the doctors because of their accents and because they are so soft spoken. I feel\u00a0very foreign here and I\u2019m staying in the guest house alone. They tell\u00a0me that there are usually other students, but for now I am the only\u00a0one, so it\u2019s a bit lonely, especially since there isn\u2019t much to do\u00a0outside of work. I\u2019m realizing how much I have to learn too, also\u00a0exhausting, but a good thing. I think I\u2019ll leave here with a renewed\u00a0focus. There\u2019s so much to learn and review. I\u2019m wishing I had my\u00a0text books with me. I\u2019m learning so much about medicine and life.\u00a0Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
