What would make him or her deliberately seek opportunities to care for the poor? The answers may inspire you!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consider Jeremy Kirchoff. As a family medicine resident he enrolled in the INMED International Medicine Certificate, studying at the\u00a0<a title=\"Baptist Medical Centre \u2013 Nalerigu, Ghana\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inmed.us\/service-learning\/training-sites\/baptist-medical-centre-ghana\/\">Baptist Medical Center<\/a>\u00a0in northern Ghana, West Africa. \u201c<em>My experience in Ghana contributed immensely to my desire to care for the underserved wherever they are located,<\/em>\u201d explains Jeremy. \u201c<em>In Africa I advanced my skills in crossing cultures as I interacted with people so very different from myself. I also sharpened my knowledge of advanced disease \u2013 for people usually don\u2019t seek help except as a last resort.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These skills continue to serve Jeremy well in his current role at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christcommunityhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Christ Community Health Services<\/a>, primary-care health centers in Memphis\u2019 most under-served neighborhoods. \u201c<em>Parallel to Ghana, my experience in Memphis is most remarkable for those role models along side whom I\u2019m learning the nuances of caring for urban Americans.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0At the first of the year, Jeremy and his wife Leah will move to Kansas City where he\u2019ll be the first full-time physician at the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopecenterkc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hope Family Care Center<\/a>, located in the city\u2019s most vulnerable zone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy offers a challenge: \u201c<em>Are you interested in this kind of career? Then find role models who are living the way you want to live. Follow their example. Seek out exemplary individuals who are doing the sort of work that\u2019s on your heart. Let yourself be mentored by them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What about the financial implications of serving people who of very little means? \u201c<em>First of all,<\/em>\u201d replies Jeremy, \u201c<em>keep your debts very low so they won\u2019t grow to dictate your later decisions. And be encouraged by the fact that though you won\u2019t make the income of your peers, you will nevertheless be better off than most people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAbove all,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>concludes Jeremy, \u201c<em>let your passion to serve and desire to follow God drive your decisions. I often think of Psalm 82:3 \u2018Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.\u2019 Pursuing the American Dream can become pretty empty. Instead, invest in people\u2019s lives. Build your treasure in heaven.
