The Mercy Kasama Way: Witnessing Unconditional Love in Practice

Today’s visits concluded my series of community rounds as I partnered with the final team member, Mercy Kasama Mia. We were scheduled to check on the infants under her care, including Jay Tondo of Malaguicay; Roxanne Terrado and Andre Villero of Cabarasan; and Christian Armada and Lexie Armada of Linao. However, our schedule was abruptly interrupted. We had to temporarily postpone our next day visits due to a significant natural calamity: an earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.4 at Davao Oriental, was strongly felt even in Tanauan, Leyte, leading to a tsunami alert. Despite the fear and disruption caused by the emergency, Mia’s dedication was immediate and absolute. She assured me that the moment things settle down, she will check on all her babies to ensure they remain on track with their critical growth and development.

Before the incident, we were able to celebrate a major milestone with a family. Mia has a baby in her care, Jay Tondo, who recently celebrated his second birthday, successfully completing his First 1000 Days Program. His birth chart confirmed his progress, and his healthy weight of 11 kilograms, combined with his visible health and activity, was a wonderful proof to the program’s achievement. I was greatly moved by the mother’s obvious appreciation and happiness. It truly drives home the fact that these home visits are far more than just weigh-ins and check-ups; they represent a deep, two-year connection built on trust. The Mercy Kasama becomes a special partner in the child’s progress, witnessing and celebrating every developmental step alongside the dedicated parents.

Reflecting on all the visits I’ve conducted, I have been deeply privileged to witness the unwavering compassion and fierce dedication of every Mercy Kasama. They embody the mission of the First 1000 Days Program. They willingly brave long, difficult walks and remote locations, caring little for the distance or the inconvenience of traveling far from the main road. Even when faced with personal difficulties during their community visits, the commitment of these dedicated individuals remains unshakeable; their resolve to serve never wavers. Their primary focus remains singular: ensuring every child receives the care and attention they need.

This experience has clarified a fundamental truth: while children certainly need food, water, clothing, and shelter to grow healthy, they equally require attention, consistent care, and, most powerfully, unconditional love.
