Tyler Coolman, 2019 Alumni Scholarship Fund Award Recipient

Tyler Coolman, AT Still University Medical Student

“The trip to Nicaragua and Costa Rica was brief, but long enough for me to come to the agitating realization that resources and access seem to be the most important determinants of health,” observes Tyler Coolman, 2019 INMED Alumni Scholarship Fund Award Recipient. This initial experience as an undergraduate helped to propel Tyler to participating in the INMED Professional Certificate Course in International Medicine & Public Health.

“Not only did the INMED Course refresh several of the tenets of public health I learned during my graduate studies, its tailored training for working and practicing internationally reminded me of my first service-learning experience in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. I appreciated learning how to approach practicing medicine in resource limited settings, where basic diagnostic tools and treatments might not be available.”

INMED Alumni Scholarship Fund Award received by Tyler Coolman will help make possible his service-learning experience at Clinica Esperanza. “Helping Honduran patients with chronic rashes and wounds on their hands and feet to be able to return to work and maintain their livelihood will be my goal while in Honduras. By completing the INMED Diploma program, I will have given myself my best chance of developing into the dermatologist and public health enthusiast I hope to be.”
