Tragedy And Uncommon Compassion In Action

jerry-umanos

Jerry Umanos, Chicago pediatrician and formerly with Lawndale Community Church’s Health Center, has been serving at the CURE Hospital in Afghanistan since 2005. His role? Caring for ill Afghan children and training Afghan physicians to do likewise. On Thursday morning, two days ago, an Afghan guard opened fire at the hospital gate killing three American physicians, including Umanos. Bill Blevins, my medical colleague who is also resident Afghanistan, wrote this morning to say, “Jerry is even now around the Altar with new saints, dressed in White, asking ‘how long, oh Lord?'”. Meanwhile the gunman, wounded in the ensuing shootout, is being cared where? At the very same CURE Hospital!
