Feeling Pretty Helpless – Angola Day 7

I rolled out about midnight in response to an urgent call from the hospital. The center sits on a escarpment that over looks the city, and it’s from there I shot one of the pics I share with you. Normally a gorgeous view, but at night the drive up the mountain is treacherous, with rock slides and wandering cows. In the ER I found a woman with what I suspect to be an infected gal bladder. She was gasping for air, and her family hovered around saying “Can’t you save her??”  The obvious treatment was to drain the pus from her gal bladder, but I was sure she would not survive the surgery. So I gave oxygen and antibiotics. We talked at length with her family – for which they seemed grateful. But moments later, her breathing stopped. The family cried, and I stood by, feeling pretty helpless.
